Albinism is a hypopigmentary disorder characterised by partial or complete lack of melanin pigment in the eyes, skin and hair (or more rarely the eyes alone). It is found in humans as well as various animals such as penguines, wallabies, turtles and alligators to name a few. However, an albino African elephant is extremely rare find. But BBC cameraman Mike Holding, who spotted a baby albino elephant while filming for a BBC wildlife programme, said: "We only saw it for a couple of minutes as the herd crossed the river." The team is unsure of its chances of long-term survival; the blazing African sunlight may cause blindness and skin problems for the calf. The skin colour of the calf is more of pink than white.
