Sound of music ... circa 3400 BC

Usually when one thinks of or talks about archaeological discovery the ideas that often come to mind are tombs, graves, foundations of houses, grain houses and temples, roads built, rituals written and pottery shards broken. How many times does one think of musical compositions or instructions for assembling and playing an instrument? Very rarely if not not at all.

In Syria, a musical scholar has done something unusual. Ziad Ajjan has composed eight poetry and musical pieces from the musical archaeological cuneiform tablet known as "Hymn of Supplication". This tablet dating back to 1400 BC was discovered in the ancient town of Ugarit, about 260 kilometers north of Damascus, in the early 20th century. The article reporting this rare act of musical composition tells us,
The tablet contains a complete hymn, both words and music, in addition to detailed performance instructions for a singer accompanied by a harpist as well as instructions on how to tune the harp.
I was not sure if and where I could find the audios of this music tracks. So I Googled "Syria ugarit music" and lo and behold! I actually found something similar but even more interesting. Looks like composer Malek Jandali has beaten Ziad Ajjan to it (assuming that Ajjan's composition is a 2010 feat). He has released an album in 2009 named Echoes from Ugarit which consists of 8 tracks based on the oldest music notation in the world which was discovered in Ugarit dating back to 3400 B.C. I listened to a couple of samples of Malek's compositions. The fact that they were played on a piano with accompaniment of other modern instruments known to us made them sound not-so-mysterious as I had hoped music about 5400 years ago would sound. But may be if I could listen to these notes on the original instruments that played it or in the voice of original singers that sang it I might have a different experience. Hhmmm ... time machine, anyone?

Pushing it back

This is a short post sharing two stories of latest archaeological discoveries that are once again pushing back the dates of the advent of “civilised” humans.

National Oceanography Centre, Southampton (UK) reports on EurekaAlert of Pavlopetri -- the world's oldest known submerged town.

The world's oldest known submerged town has been revealed through the discovery of late Neolithic pottery. The finds were made during an archaeological survey of Pavlopetri, off the southern Laconia coast of Greece. Marine geo-archaeologist Dr Nic Flemming of the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton said: "The discovery of Neolithic pottery is incredible! It means that we are looking at a port city which may be 5000-6000 years old, with trade goods and wrecks nearby showing some of the very earliest days of seafaring trade in the Mediterranean." [...]"What we've got here is something which is two or even three thousand years older than most of the submerged cities which have been studied," said Flemming: "And it is uniquely complete. We have almost the complete town plan, the main streets and all of the domestic buildings. "
William G. Gilroy writes in ScienceDaily, based on materials provided by University of Notre Dame, about how World's Oldest Known Granaries Predate Agriculture.

A new study co-authored by Ian Kuijt, associate professor of anthropology at the University of Notre Dame, describes recent excavations in Jordan that reveal evidence of the world's oldest know granaries. [...]However, in a paper appearing in the June 23 edition of the Proceedings of the National Academies of Sciences, Kuijt and Bill Finlayson, director, Council for British Research in the Levant, describe recent excavations at Dhra' near the Dead Sea in Jordan that provide evidence of granaries that precede the emergence of fully domesticated plants and large-scale sedentary communities by at least 1,000 years.
These kinds of discoveries keep scientists on their toes, rethinking the flow of history and pre-history. Some day perhaps the concept of Yuga cycles and that of advanced knowledge that ancients possessed will be vindicated through such discoveries.

Diving into history

Archaeology is kind of a non-glamorous branch of science. It is a convergence of many different physical and social sciences which are used as tools to construct the jigsaw puzzle of our past. But sadly humans are not as interested in the past as they are in the future. General public thinks of archaeologists as khaki-wearing folk who love meticulously dusting off the tiny little pieces of shards made by unknown people from thousands of years ago. So most of the archaeological discoveries manage to excite only the members of this close community and go unappreciated by the general populous. Only a few discoveries like that of Tutankhamen’s (lovingly dubbed King Tut) gold-laden tomb makes it to the front pages of newspapers and magazines.
Even more obscure branch of archaeology is underwater archaeology. Although a lot of our history lies submerged underwater not many of us think there is anything valuable to look there. Only when something astonishing like the Bimini wall or the Antikythera device comes out of the depths of the ocean, does our attention get focused on it briefly. However there has been increasing interest among the archaeologists of today to go diving to peer into the past. Archaeology, a publication of the Archaeological Institute of America, highlights just a few of these ongoing underwater archaeology projects, from the recovery of a sixth-century B.C. Phoenician shipwreck, where excavators found a cargo that included elephant tusks and amber, to work on a 19th-century vessel in Oklahoma's Red River that has given archaeologists their first look at early steamship design.

One great work of research based on a worldwide exploration diving for the underwater ruins of a lost civilization is the book Underworld by investigative journalist and author, Graham Hancock. This book follows clues in ancient scriptures and mythology and in the scientific evidence of the flood that swept the Earth at the end of the last Ice Age. I believe such works are rare because of our belief that we are the most advanced humans this planet has ever seen and so there’s nothing to look for in the past except exploits of primitive cavemen. However if you do believe the cyclic model of life in ancient Hindu philosophy, the Yuga cycle, then you should definitely be curious as to what is hidden away in the blue depths that cover 3/4th of our planet today.

Decoding antiquity

Development of language and writing as means of communication has been one of the most important features of humans that has separated us from all the other creatures on this planet. All earthlings have some form or other of communication, ranging from chemical to acoustic, depending on their position along the evolutionary ladder. the humans are considered the most evolved in this regard with ability of articulating our speech greatly with help of highly developed vocal organs. The highly developed brain and the ability of gripping and manoeuvring objects uniquely with the opposing thumb also lead to us developing writing system, a feature unequivocally unique to our species.

There still some dispute over the very first culture that seems to have used writing as a form of communication. New discoveries made by archaeologists keep pushing the dates of first use of writing more and more backward. Also, out of all the scripts that have been discovered, not all have been deciphered. Recent history has shown us that any time a new script has been deciphered, be it the Egyptian hieroglyphs or Mayan scriptures, it has had a significant impact on our understanding of that culture. More often than not it has awed us by the sophistication in and knowledge of various fields, from sciences to architecture to politics.

In his article in May 2009, Andrew Robinson of New Scientist tells us about 8 scripts that we still haven't been able to read. The article details the origins of the scripts, their antiquity and why we haven't been able to read them yet. There are various extents of their mystery to us. In some of the cases, the languages are known in their spoken form but only the script hasn't been deciphered, like the Zapotec script from the New world cultures. Other instances are the opposite, like the Proto-Elamite script believed to be the earliest script discovered. And then there are the ultimate puzzlers like

The notoriously solitary Phaistos disc from Crete appears to be the world's oldest "printed" document. The disc, about 15 centimetres in diameter, occupies pride of place at the Heraklion Museum in Crete. Some say it should not be regarded as an undeciphered script because it is in fact a hoax - the Piltdown Man of ancient writing.

Well, after reading the article, being the optimist I am, I chose to focus on the fact that humanity still has 8 more chances of being amazed and humbled by the antiquity. And I hope at least one of that comes true in my lifetime.

Sunday Spotlight: Mystery of the Sphinx

The documentary on YouTube:

Author and lecturer, John Anthony West delivered a seismic shock to archaeology in the early 1990's when he and Boston University geologist Robert Schoch revealed that the Great Sphinx of Giza, Egypt, showed evidence of rainfall erosion. Such erosion could only mean that the Sphinx was carved during or before the rains that marked the transition of northern Africa from the last Ice Age to the present interglacial epoch, a transition that occurred in the millennia from 10,000 to 5000 BC. The Emmy award-winning documentary produced on this research, Mystery of the Sphinx, was released in 1993 and was a runaway success. I came across the same recently on YouTube and this blog entry is about some completely-radical-for-the-time facts that this documentary put forth and the active research that is still carried out regarding this theory today.

Few of the discoveries and contentions in the said documentary that I found particularly interesting and were very shocking to the archaeological community at the time are,
  • The Sphinx was built before Egypt became a desert, which would be 9,000 to 10,000 years ago.
  • All the monuments in Egypt show wind erosion except the Sphinx, the Sphinx enclosure and the temple, all of which show water erosion.
  • The water erosion is not caused by the floods of the Nile but by constant and intense rainfall.
  • The weathering is found beneath the granite repairs carried out, in the limestone from which the Sphinx is made. Thus it is not an erosion that has occurred in modern times.
  • Based on this observation, the 9,000 to 10,000 years old age of Sphinx is confirmed by Palaeoarchaeology.
  • The whole Sphinx was not carved out at the same time out of the limestone bedrock. The front of the Sphinx's body is older than the back.
  • Zahi Hawwas and Mark Lehner, both prominent Egyptologists, confidently state that the face of the Sphinx matches well with that of the pharaoh Khafre (the alleged commissioner of the Sphinx). James Romano, Curator of the Egyptian collection, Brooklyn Museum, mentions that statues made by Egyptians showed the features of the person very accurately, including facial defects. However, Detective Frank Domingo of NYPD found that Sphinx did not portray pharaoh Khafre at all. It has, in fact, features of an African person, possibly female.
  • Objects can be levitated using interfacing sound waves. In the region of interface, there are produced "sound wells" in which objects can be confined. The experiments at the time could only levitate small pebbles. (My note: For levitating huge stone blocks, the wavelength of the sound waves would have to be large and hence, frequency very low, i.e., infrasonic sound. Wikipedia gives some interesting facts about its effect of human behaviour, "Infrasound has been known to cause feelings of awe or fear in humans. Since it is not consciously perceived, it can make people feel vaguely that supernatural events are taking place.")
  • The face of the Sphinx is not proportional to the rest of the body but much smaller. Since the rest of the body was covered with sand for most of its lifetime, the face could have been carved and re-carved (my note: without any sense of proportion of the rest) over the millennia.
  • Pharaoh Khafre repaired the Sphinx, which was already ancient and degraded by his time, and did not commission its building.
  • This theory could also point at existence of Atlantis civilisation, civilisation on Mars and its connection with Earth.

What I also found interesting in this documentary is that there are a few instances where the prominent personalities being interviewed exemplify the typical thinking of archaeologists. And that precisely shows why theories as revolutionary as that of John Anthony West and Dr. Schoch get the kind of unwelcoming response that they get. James Romano, Curator of the Egyptian collection, Brooklyn Museum, says at one point, ".....if we take the alternative view, see what we are stuck with.....". So because we would have to make the effort of rebuilding the whole castle, lets just deny that we stumbled upon its foundations! He goes on to make a statement which epitomises the fundamental on which we base all branches of research today, "Culture evolves in a linear fashion." This is something I personally do not agree with and I'm excited to find that John Anthony West also believes in the "cyclic form" of life.

Sunday spotlight: John Anthony West

I have written about his most appreciated and very courageous work on re-dating of the Sphinx in the past. But I thought I needed to write a separate blog entry about the person himself.

John Anthony West, a name that became famous (or infamous, depending on your viewpoint) after his daring documentary The mystery of the Sphinx, released in 1993. Collaborating with numerous experts from various branches of science (geologist Robert Schoch, paleoclimatologist John Kutzbach, detective Frank Domingo of NYPD and seismologist Thomas Dobecki, to name a few) he shocked the world with a well-researched and well-supported theory that would make us rewrite and rearrange our history. JAW describes himself as "rogue Egyptologist and a mystic in a sceptics clothing."

Today, after almost 15 years after his first appearance on the archaeological scene, and at age of 75, he remains an active researcher, author and guide. He has embraced the new-age communication modes such as blogging, YouTube broadcasting and having his own website. Through his blog, he promotes and broadcasts his own radio program, PhoenixFire. His YouTube channel (JAWSPHINX99) is not as updated but does give a glimpse of his varied activities. The most updated and informative by far is his website. He gives lectures, writes books, produces videos about the unusual research that he does in Egyptian symbolism. He also take small groups of interested people on guided tours of Egypt! Through his efforts, The Ancient Wisdom Foundation, a not for profit, educational foundation designed to help finance research into the big questions of lost knowledge and ancient civilizations, came into existence. The website also showcases his fellow Egyptologist and scientists who dare to question the established norms and are not afraid to rewrite the history of mankind.

I wish John Anthony West all the best in his journey forward and towards the truth, wherever it might be.

Animation to the rescue

An excerpt from UCLA Today’s news item ‘Team's re-creation of ancient Karnak brings history of pharaohs to life’ reads, “The result of two years of painstaking research by a team of more than 24 scholars and technicians, Digital Karnak explores how scores of existing ruins may have originally looked and demonstrates how they came to be altered over time as generations of pharaohs put their stamp on the site that served as the religious center for Thebes, the Ancient Egyptian capital during the Golden Age of the Pharaohs.

This is just one of the numerous examples of the use computer simulation, 3-d modelling and animation has in the scientific research today. These tools have afforded the scientists, from Egyptologists to space researchers, to transcend the barrier of space and time, albeit virtually, and aided the research tremendously. Based on the data already at hand, simulations and animations build a hypothetical image (be it a structure or a flight path) of what could have been or what could be. Having an image or action sequence running in front of one’s eyes is vastly helpful in the areas of research where the scientists haven’t had a chance to be in the place, time or situation they are studying.

Of course animation took its time to reach the sophisticated, 3-d, virtual reality stage that it is in today. The early humans “animated” simple day-to-day scenes by painting a sequence of actions on a vessel which one simply turned to see the “animation”. I’m sure you still remember the ‘flip-books’ when you were in school, pages of which had to be rapidly flipped in order to see a Cricketer play a shot or a soccer player score a goal. That was animation in its good ol’ 2-d form. Even today 2-d animation is useful for simulating the history of World War II or the spread of various religions across the globe. Of course if you are trying to simulate the threat of all the space-junk that orbits around the Earth to a space craft, you need much advanced, 3-d, virtual reality sort of animations.

However, simulations and animations are used mostly for entertainment purpose in our society. Most of it is aimed towards the computer and video games that have zero intellectual-stimulation and high violence-stimulation quotient for the brain. Very few but sensible people use these wonderful tools for edutainment. Someone like Matthew Sweetapple and his Rockford’s Rock Opera tries to educate the children about sustainability and our responsibility towards this planet. Others like the What the bleep?!? team give the viewers some food for thought about whether we really know what we think we know.

Lost treasures of ancient India

While surfing through the myriad of videos on YT, jumping from one to another related one, I somehow ended up at a playlist of videos about ancient civilisations and their technological know-how. If you read my blog regularly you probably know by now that this is my favourite topic to read and write about. So being true to my character, I’m going to share a 5-part video series which is about ancient Indian civilisations, the ancient history and technology. It is the episode(s) of Discovery Channel’s series Lost treasures of the ancient world.

The programme gives a fairly detailed overview of ancient Indian history, social and political, and how it influenced the ups and downs of scientific and technological progress of India. There are some well-executed animations that bring back to life the ancient town of Mohen-jo-daro. However, I will warn my viewers about the narrator’s pronunciations of Indians names and terms. He absolutely mangles them and it is a horrible exercise for an Indian to listen to him. So in case you plan to use any of the Indian terms in this documentary for your research, please make sure you find out what it is REALLY called. Other than that, it is a great watch for non-Indians and modern Indians equal.

Sumerian cosmology

This blog entry was originally going to be a summary of Zecharia Sitchin’s research on Sumerian ancient knowledge and cosmogony. However, while researching the internet for his work I came across a few websites which were established with the aim of disproving Sitchin’s work. This wasn’t really surprising as unconventional research is never welcomed with wide arms in the mainstream science. However, as I read the material on the websites (especially one of them), it seemed to me that the author was knowledgeable and was making a sincere effort of setting the record straight rather than simply trying to gain publicity. So now, like a true, rational scientist, I’m going to present a summary of both sides of the story in my blog. And leave it to my readers to decide which one they think is “correct”. Since I have neither read any of Sitchin’s books (my knowhow is based on his website) nor studied Hebrew or Cuneiform script, I’m unable to decide for myself which side to lean towards. But I’m happy that I at least got to know that there are two sides to this story.

Zecharia Sitchin is a well-known name for researchers and followers of ancient knowledge. He first gained fame in 1976 after publishing the book 'The 12th planet' based on a radical new idea that the ancient Sumerian texts, which are considered by scholars as allegorical myths about wars between Gods of the Sumerians, were in fact realistic records of cosmological events. He went on to publish 11 more books, the latest one in 2007, which extend the idea further and delve deeper into the texts and records left behind by the ancient culture of Sumer. He claims to have studied various clay tablets on which the texts in question were scribed in Cuneiform script as well as ancient artefacts found in excavations.

The main idea that sparked Sitchin’s research and publications was the record of a large-scale celestial event in the Mesopotamian Epic of Creation (Enuma Elish). When our solar system was still in formative stage, a rogue planet (Nibiru/Marduk) ejected from another solar system got pulled into ours by gravitational force. It then collided with a planet Tiamat (old Earth) causing it to split apart. Larger part became our Earth as we know today; the other part got spread into the belt of asteroids we see between Mars and Jupiter. Tiamat’s original orbit was between Mars and Jupiter (hence the big gap and asteroid belt between them) which got deflected to the orbit of Earth today. Our Moon was the satellite of Tiamat (Kingu) which remained with the newly formed Earth. The external planet, Nibiru, got captured into a very eccentric orbit into our solar system and hence visits the “inner planets” only once every 3600 years. The advanced life-forms from Nibiru, called the Annunaki, are the reason for technological knowhow and progress of the Homo sapiens on Earth. They visited Earth in ancient times and changed us from cave-dwellers to pyramid-builders. Sitchin’s theories and books received the typical response any esoteric, unconventional research receives; tremendous interest from the general public and no serious attention from the main stream scientists and scholars.

Even today, the criticism continues unabated and some of it seems bolstered by modern research. Linguistic scholar Michael Heiser’s website is one of the best resource of the objections to Sitchin’s translations of the Sumerian cuneiform script as well as his understanding of the texts. The material on his website is well-researched and well-written. As one reads through pages of his various papers one definitely begins to take these “objections” seriously, if not become completely convinced. The “solar system-like” depiction on Sumerian cylinder seal VA 243 is the backbone of Sitchin’s ideas. He claims the depiction shows central Sun and 12 planets around it thus proving Sumerians knew of 12 planets (hence the title of his first book). Heiser shows from his research that this interpretation is wrong and central body is not Sun but a star and so are the other 12 dots. Also, the word “Nibiru” is not used to name a specific planet but more like an adjective according to Heiser. There are further examples of words which are said to be misinterpreted by Sitchin and thus not support his theory. I will leave it to those interested to check out Heiser’s website themselves.

However, what makes Sitchin’s ideas interesting to me is the fact that some of the ideas he put forth decades ago (which in turn Sumerians recorded thousands of years ago) seem to be corroborated by new astronomical findings. The presence of an additional planet/oid in our solar system in the regions far beyond Pluto has been hinted at by modern astronomers. Sitchin’s website claims connection of his ideas to many more modern astronomical discoveries. This is the reason why the whole Planet X/Nibiru research has been taken up by young inquisitors like Jason Martell. Another point that came to my mind (and I’m sure others would have thought of this) was about the size of our Moon. According to Sitchin’s interpretation of Sumerian texts, our Moon was the satellite of Tiamat (Kingu) which remained with the newly formed Earth. Could this explain why the Moon is too big for Earth to be a satellite? May be it was the correct size as satellite for the larger Tiamat? Well, those are just the two cents of my inquisitive mind.

Neanderthal acoustics

Another interesting news item I came across on BBC News:

A musical experience with a difference is being previewed at the National Museum Wales in Cardiff - an attempt to recreate the sound of the Neanderthals.

Jazz composer Simon Thorne was given the task of creating the "soundscape" to provide a musical backdrop to some of the ancient exhibits on display.

If this sounds interesting, follow the above link to read more and to listen to the excerpts from the composer’s rendering of Neanderthal sounds.

What goes around, comes around

This blog entry has been long overdue, since November last year, when I listened to John Anthony West’s (JAW, for short) PhoenixFire show, episode 8, Consider the Kaliyuga. However, I wanted to write a well thought piece and so I didn’t rush into it. I read his article by the same title on Graham Hancock’s website. Amongst other things, JAW reminds us of his favourite belief that progress is not linear. Progress does not go, in his own words, “from dumb, primitive caveman to smart old us, with our weapons of mass destruction and bobblehead dolls.” To support this, he gives the example of Plato’s concept of ‘Cyclic life’ and the even more elaborately explained ‘Yuga’ concept in Hindu Vedic literature. I agree with this form of life and progress/regress myself and do not believe that we are the first advanced human civilisation this planet has “endured”. You will find this opinion mentioned in few of my other blog entries as well. Human race has reached the pinnacle of progress and then has tumbled off the throne at least once, if not more times, before. As JAW points out, almost every civilisation has legends of ancestors who were more progressed, materialistically and spiritually, than us. Up until recently we have called them a myth, a fantastic invention of some innovative mind etc. only because we were never progressed enough to grasp the ideas in those stories. Only when we exploded our first atomic bomb did we realise that one such bomb, Brahmastra, was used in epic war of Mahabhaarat. Only when we ourselves fly around the globe in Boeing 747s do we understand that the flying machines appearing in legends worldwide can actually be manufactured and used. These are only couple examples that should help us open our minds and consider the myths and legends more rationally. And, more importantly, not think of us as the most progressed homo sapiens ever.
As illustrated in JAW’s audio show and his article, ancient Hindu philosophy measures the time in ‘Yuga’, age or epoch. There are 4 different Yuga, each characterised by a virtue that is accorded the highest value in each one.
Krita / Satya Yuga: Dhyana (meditation). In the highest yuga, the great majority of people can experience spirituality by direct intuitive realization of truth. The veil between the material and the transcendent realms becomes almost transparent. It is a period free from any kind of unhappiness or misery. [Plato’s Golden age]
Treta Yuga: Yadnya (sacrifice). The Treta Yuga is the mental age. Mental power is harnessed and men are in power. There are inventions that dissolve the illusion of time. Clairvoyance and telepathy are common skills. [Plato’s Silver age]
Dwapar Yuga: Archana (worship). In the Dwapar Yuga, science flourishes, people experience the spiritual in terms of subtle energies and rational choices, inventions are abundant, particularly those that dissolve the illusion of distance (between people and between things), and power is mostly in the hands of women. [Plato’s Bronze age]
Kali Yuga: Daana (alms). In the lowest epoch, Kali Yuga, most people are aware only of the physical aspects of existence. The predominant emphasis of living is material survival, and power is mostly in the hands of men. [Plato’s Iron age] (Source: Wikipedia, text in [ ] mine.)

The occurrence of these Yuga best makes sense when considered as illustrated in the figure at the top which depicts the ideas of Sri Yukteswar. There is some dispute over the time scale of each of the Yuga, the one in Hindu scriptures requiring 4.3 million years for one cycle to finish. Sri Yukteswar revised these estimates to 24000 years in total and JAW feels these are more agreeable. I’m not going to comment on which time scale is correct though I feel the original 4.3 million year one is way too long based on the rate of progress/regress of modern humans in last few thousand years. I keep typing ‘progress/regress’ because that is a relative term and also it will depend on which Yuga we are in right now, which will be clear in some time. The cycle of progress/regress should, logically, go like this: Krita/Satya (descending half) → descending Treta → descending Dwapar → descending Kali → ascending Kali → ascending Dwapar → ascending Treta → Krita/Satya (ascending half) ..... and this continues to cycle. So now based on the “definitions and characteristics” of the various Yuga mentioned earlier, below is my interpretation of what could be happening,
  • In descending half of Krita/Satya, a great majority of people can experience spirituality by direct intuitive realization of truth. But the spiritual consciousness decreases over time. The veil between the material and the transcendent realms, which was almost transparent, becomes less so. Communication and experience are still possible through mental power, physical aspect is redundant. It is a period free from any kind of unhappiness or misery.
  • In descending Treta, the spiritual consciousness is about 75% of that in Krita [source here]. But mental power can still be harnessed and men are in power. Clairvoyance and telepathy are common skills. But the veil between the material and the transcendent realms thickens. People lean towards reuse of various inventions that allow physical transcendence of time and space.
  • In descending Dvapara, people experience the spiritual only in terms of subtle energies and rational choices and spiritual consciousness is reduced to 50% of Krita [source here]. Scientific and technological regress makes lifestyle more materialistic. Some knowledge is lost and science and technology become limited to 3-d of space instead of 4-d of space and time in Treta. People become more warlike. It is definitely not a period free from unhappiness or misery as in Krita and Treta.
  • In the lowest epoch, Kali Yuga, most people are aware only of the physical aspects of existence. The predominant emphasis of living is material survival, and power is mostly in the hands of men. Spiritual consciousness is reduced to 25% of Krita [source here]. In descending Kali, whatever remains of scientific and technological knowledge is lost, people are forced to adopt primitive lifestyle, that of cavemen or hunter-gatherers. There are some signs of “religion” in form of rituals whose meaning has been long lost. Then the march of progress begins again, with the ascending half of Kali, which is probably what we know as “history” today.
  • In ascending Dwapar, science flourishes, inventions are abundant, particularly those that dissolve the illusion of distance (between people and between things). People experience the spiritual in terms of subtle energies and rational choices and power is mostly in the hands of women. I feel that we are on verge of going into the ascending Dwapar now. Or in fact, it looks like not whole of the human race makes the transition all at once. Some sections of the society and some nations are already showing signs of being well and truly into ascending Dwapar but majority of the world population is still struggling in Kali. May be it always happens that some lead the way and rest follow, which can only be logical reflecting on our history so far.
  • The ascending Treta is the mental age. Mental power is harnessed and men are in power. There are inventions that dissolve the illusion of time. Clairvoyance and telepathy are common skills. People become more peace-loving as the ability to transcend time and space makes warring over anything futile. We are obviously yet to reach this stage but we do have examples of such inventions and skills in legends and mythology, which might be from the descending Treta. It is plenty clear that we will only be able to grasp the features of a given Yuga (descending, in the past) when we ascend back to it.
  • In the ascending half of Krita/Satya, the highest yuga, a great majority of people acquire ability to experience spirituality by direct intuitive realization of truth. The veil between the material and the transcendent realms becomes almost transparent. It is a period free from any kind of unhappiness or misery.
If we think of life on this planet in such cyclical manner, so many things become clearer. Myths do not seem like myths anymore. According to the article in Wikipedia, “Inventions are characteristic of both Dwapar and Treta yuga. Temples, wars, and writing are hallmarks of Dwapar and Kali yugas. In the higher ages (Treta and Krita/Satya), writing is unnecessary because people communicate directly by thought. Temples are unnecessary because people feel the omnipresence of God. Wars are rare but they do occur.” So then does it not make sense that the archaeological finds are never those indicating very highly sophisticated societies? If things that can be “found” tens of thousands of years later are made only in Kali and Dwapar yuga, how will we ever see an evidence for a society that has attained Treta or Krita/Satya yuga progress? If such finds are a rarity that is only logical! And if they get classified as OOParts that just shows our lack of understanding of the history of human race and the manner in which life has continued on this planet.

World’s first animation!

Iran's 'Burnt City', called Shahr-e-Sookhteh, sits on the banks of the Helmand river along the Zahedan-Zabol road in the southeast province of Sistan va Baluchestan. A Bronze Age archaeological treasure trove, it was one of the world's largest communities about 4800 years ago, at the dawn of urban settlement. Based on more than 3 decades of excavation and analysis by the Iranian archaeologists, the city was built around 3200 BC, covering an area of 151 hectares, and abandoned over a millennium later in 2100 BC. The city experienced four stages of civilization and was burnt down three times. It took its eventual name because it was never rebuilt after the last fire.

This archaeological find is especially made interesting by the discoveries such as the oldest game of backgammon, metallurgical finds, world’s earliest artificial eyeball, human skulls showing signs of brain surgery, only to name a few. Information about each of these can be found online as well as in documents for those interested. However, the artifact that I found most interesting is an earthen goblet, with a diameter of 8 cm and height of 10 cm, which can be classified as “world’s oldest animation”. The images painted around the outer surface of the goblet, when it is turned around, portray a goat that jumps towards a tree and eats its leaves!!! The archaeologists have managed to make an animated piece on the basis of these images in the form of a 20-second film. This film is available for download. The images show movement in an intricate way that is an unprecedented discovery.

Antikythera mechanism replicated

A few sponge divers from the Aegean island of Symi discovered an ancient shipwreck more than a century ago by accident by a barren islet called Antikythera. A 10-month expedition sponsored by the Greek government brought back incredible treasures like bronze and marble statues, jewellery, glassware and furniture, including an ornate bronze throne. In all the excitement, nobody noticed a corroded lump of rock found along with these treasures. However, a few months later, it cracked open, revealing traces of gearwheels, precisely marked circular scales and inscriptions in ancient Greek. The battered artifact became known as the "Antikythera mechanism", and it caused excitement and skepticism. Until then, not one gearwheel, pointer or scale had been found to show presence of technology in ancient times and some scholars did not rule out the possibility of a hoax.
The mechanism serves as a good example of how we humans chose to ignore or dismiss anything that we cannot understand or explain based on our current knowledge. The scholars at the time could not explain how such a complex, mechanised gadget could have been engineered about 2000 years ago and what purpose could it have served. Therefore, the Antikythera mechanism got slowly forgotten until recently, when a collaborative study (including X-raying) of the device was undertaken by a group of universities and companies. It turns out that it was a hand-wound clockwork device used to calculate the motions of the sun, moon and planets as seen from Earth, as well as to predict solar and lunar eclipses.

The New Scientist has published few informative articles about the mechanism and how it worked. There is also a video (featured above) made by them, and broadcast on YouTube, about the reconstruction of this device. Michael Wright, a former senior curator of the Science Museum in London, has studied the mechanism for decades and has recreated a working model of the ancient computer recently. He explains in the video how the device works with a simple rotation of a handle but also illustrates how complex the inner mechanism is! A must read and see for anyone who thinks that contemporary human beings are the smartest and technologically most advanced that the planet has ever seen.

2012, Planet X, Nibiru and all that

Those of you who follow developments in scientific world are sure to have heard about the 2012 prophecies and the resurgence in the research about planet X it has caused. The Maya of mesoamerica are known to have had very sophisticated calendars to keep track of time. They had, in fact, more than one calendars for keeping track of time based on various heavenly bodies. Of these, the Long count calendar was the principal one and goes on for 5125 solar years. Therefore, based on its (uncertain) start date of August 11, 3114 BC, its first cycle is set to end on December 21, 2012 AD. Since the calendar "ends" on this date, there have been predictions that the world will come to an end on this day. However, most of us will agree with what Dr Karl Kruszelnicki has to say, ".....when a calendar comes to the end of a cycle, it just rolls over into the next cycle. In our Western society, every year 31 December is followed, not by the End of the World, but by 1 January. So 13.0.0.0.0 in the Mayan calendar will be followed by 0.0.0.0.1 - or good-ol' 22 December 2012, with only a few shopping days left to Christmas." At least I like to think this way! According to the Wikipedia entry on 2012, "2012 is claimed by some with New age beliefs to be a great year of spiritual transformation (or alternatively an apocalypse). There is disagreement among believers as to whether 2012 will see an end of civilization, or humanity will be elevated to a higher level."

It seems like the humankind is slightly masochistic in nature as we enjoy entertaining the thought of large-scale destruction on this planet that will wipe out all or most of us. This is apparent from the successful runs at the box office that movies like Day after tomorrow, Deep impact etc. enjoy. So with the predictions of apocalypse in Dec 2012 came various theories about how the world will end. The most "accepted" one is passing of a massive astronomical object from very near the Earth and its gravitational effects causing mass destruction on Earth, wiping out most or all life on the planet. Even though there are no known massive "stray" objects in our solar system that can play the role of this "terminator" of sorts, there are some indications of an existence of such an objects on the far outskirts of the solar system. NASA and modern astronomers are detecting patterns in the orbits and spins of outer planets which suggest the presence of a massive body (planet or otherwise) in the vicinity. Couple of the planetoids found (Sedna and Xena) do not have sufficient mass to explain the effects observed. Therefore, our astronomers still seem to be looking for the right candidate for Planet X, where X signifies both 'unknown' and the Roman numeral 10, the number the planet would have if found.

The search (or re-search) is made more tantalising by the claims of some researchers of ancient culture and knowledge, that the ancient Sumerians did know of such a planet, 7-8 times larger than Earth and that had an extremely elliptical orbit around the Sun completed in 3600 Earth years, called Nibiru. The ancient clay tablets describe the solar system as having 12 planets, Nibiru (the planet of crossing) being the 12th one. They tell us about the earlier "crossing" of this planet with the orbits of the others and the consequences of it, one of which was the creation of Earth itself! There are myriad of websites, books and videos about research about Planet X and its possible connection with Sumerian planet Nibiru. The two most extensive and informative websites I found on this topic are Jason Martell's xFacts.com (the Planet X research and Ancient artifacts sections) and Robert Sepehr's Planet X video. Jason has done some extensive research into the Planet X - Nibiru connection based on Dr. Zecharia Sitchin's research. His website also boasts of the largest online informative collection of Sumerian artifacts. Robert Sepehr's video channel features interviews with various researchers of this topic. It also has information on past research on the subject and noted researchers (including Einstein's support to the Crustal displacement theory).

Whether the supposed Planet X / Nibiru will cause the apocalypse on Earth, in 2012 or earlier or later, I find this research topic interesting as it brings a fact to the forefront which we all, if we are true scientists, should acknowledge. We ARE NOT the most advanced (technologically, spiritually or culturally) humans that have existed on this planet and there is A LOT we can learn from the past.....about our future. Because progress is cyclic, not linear.

Do you have the correct time?

This is going to be a short, spontaneous burst of a blog :). I was watching random videos on YouTube on a Friday night and I came across this video from a very talended artist, Gary Reef. He makes clay masks, fires them and uses them in his art. And I'm sure there are so many artists and sculpters and potters that do the same. So that got me thinking............

After thousands of years, when our civilisation is decayed into fossils and buried artifacts, all the technological advances we've made would have vanished through passage of time and these clay masks might still remain preserved. If the archaeologists of the new civilisation found these, wouldn't they think of us as primitive people? The dating methods would give a manufacture date of today. And we will be portrayed as clay/mud pottery making simple people. Because that's all they would have to base their theory on.....a part of a jigsaw puzzle. But they wouldn't know its not complete.

Would something of the sort be happening today when our archaeologists study the ancient civilisations?

Forbidden Archaeology

Links to the video series, Mysterious Origins Of Man - Forbidden Archeology:
Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5
I am not an archaeologist but I do have tremendous interest in the field. Infact its my dream to be a part of an archaeological project albeit it would be in a capacity of a radiochemist. So understandably I have and still do read a lot of litrature on the subject, whose subject matter varies from paleoarchaeology to egyptology.
Recently I came accross some videos (links above) on YouTube (recorded quite a few years ago) that talk about a book written in 1993 by Michael Cremo and Richard Thompson. The book, Forbidden Archaeology, quickly became an underground classic. Today it is a bestseller, with foreign editions in over a dozen languages. It presents both accepted and anomalous scientific evidence defying traditional ideas concerning human evolution.

As much as Darwinian theory of evolution has been upheld by the majority of scientists, it always has been a subject of controversy. Especially so when it comes to proving that humans evolved from primates. And today absence of evidence has been acknowledged and given the name "missing link", a creature that connects primates to humans, an evolutionary middle stage. So is it possible then that humans originated and evolved on this planet in a different way? Is it possible that we have climbed this ladder from being a hunter-gatherer to the technologically advanced human more than once? And everytime we either are dislodged from this pinnacle by our own deeds or by nature? I believe that life on this planet has gone on in cycles and that we are not the first advanced human civilisation on the face of this planet. The book mentioned above and the the series of videos tries to tell us precisely this.....and shows us the evidence to prove it! Now its left to us whether we want to believe it or not.

In the video, Richard Thompson mentions that there has always been a "knowledge filter" in all branches of science. And the general public gets to know only what has passed through this filter and not the actual knowledge. Graham Hancock, an investigative journalist says "Humans are a species with amnesia. We have forgotten something very important about our past. But our civilisation is not the apex of advances made by human beings."

There is much I could go on writing about the material presented in the videos and the book. But I leave it to you to watch, read, hear, think and form your own opinion. The only question I would like to ask: Does one throw away the remaining pieces of jigsaw puzzle because the (partial) picture created is what one likes? Or should one strive on till one uses up ALL the pieces and is therefore sure that the picture is REALLY complete?
